How do I create a plan readers can subscribe to?

In this story

Where: Readers & money → Plans

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/money/plans (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • Connect a payment gateway in Settings → Readers & money → Connections → Payments.
  • Selling needs the Memberships feature. If it is off you see "Selling is switched off", with Add features. You can still prepare plans, but readers can’t subscribe until you add it. See your plan on keynate.com.
  • You need permission to manage payments.

Steps

  1. Open Readers & money, then Plans.
  2. Tap New plan.
  3. Enter a Plan name and optionally a Short description.
  4. Choose the Currency and enter the Price.
  5. Under Billing, choose Every month, Every 3 months or Every year.
  6. Set Free trial (days) (0 = no trial) and Grace days (access kept after a failed payment).
  7. Add short lines under What readers get.
  8. Under What this plan unlocks, choose All premium stories, Members-only stories too and No ads as needed.
  9. Under Sell in your apps, keep Sell this plan in your Android and iOS apps on (or turn it off). Optionally enter a Price in apps.
  10. Tap Create plan.

Sell in your apps (Android and iPhone)

  • Every plan is also sold in your apps through Google Play and the App Store, unless you turn it off. Readers get the same membership on the website and in the apps.
  • Price in apps is empty by default: the website price is used. The stores round it to their nearest price and show it with tax.
  • The line under the price shows what you get: about 85%, after Google's or Apple's 15%.
  • Each plan card shows an Apps chip: Ready, Waiting for store setup, Updating the stores or Needs a new app version.
  • The store steps only you can do (Play payments profile, Apple agreements, bank and tax) are on the Apps page of your site on keynate.com. Keynate creates the store products and makes the new app version for you.
  • Coupons, day passes and extra currencies stay on the website.
  • Readers manage or cancel an app membership in Google Play or the App Store. Refunds are made by the store and end access at once.

Good to know

  • Plans renew by themselves each period. See Subscription renewals.
  • To open a story only for chosen plans, set it on the story. See Who can read this story.
  • Optionally add Prices in other currencies. Readers abroad pay in their currency.
  • New plans start in your site's default currency. If none of your connected gateways can charge in a currency, you are warned.
  • Changing the price or billing creates a new version. People already subscribed keep their price. New subscribers get the new one.
  • Archive plan: new readers can't choose it. Current subscribers keep paying and reading as before.
  • Each plan card shows its subscribers, free trial days and what it opens.
  • A reader who bought in an app can't buy again on the website (and the other way round).

Common problems

  • "Give the plan a name."
  • "Enter a price above zero, for example 99 or 99.50."
  • "Each currency can have one price, and not … (the main price)."
