How do I show Google ads in my Android and iPhone apps?

In this story

Where: Settings → Readers & money → Ads

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/ads#app-ads (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • Your site needs the Android or iPhone app. If it has none, the section shows Add an app (it opens keynate.com).
  • Only the site owner or an admin can change ads settings.
  • You need a Google account.

Steps

Step 1 of 3: Make your free Google AdMob account

  1. Open admob.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
  2. In the left menu, tap Apps, then Add app.
  3. Choose Android. If you also have the iPhone app, do these steps again and choose iOS.
  4. Google asks if your app is listed on a supported app store. Choose No (your app is new).
  5. Type your app's name, confirm user metrics, then tap Add.

After your app is in the store: in AdMob open Apps → View all apps and tap Add store next to your app. Google may need 24 to 48 hours (sometimes a week) to find it.

Step 2 of 3: Copy two codes for each app

  1. In AdMob open Apps → View all apps. Tap the copy icon next to your App ID. It has a ~ in it.
  2. Open your app, then Ad units. Tap Get started or Add ad unit.
  3. Choose Banner → Select. Name it "Bottom banner", then tap Create ad unit.
  4. Copy the ad unit code. It has a / in it.
  5. Optional: make a second banner called "In the list" in the same way.

Step 3 of 3: Paste them here

  1. Open Settings → Readers & money → Ads and go to Ads in your apps.
  2. For each app, paste the App ID, the Bottom banner code and (optional) the In-list banner code.
  3. Leave Show ads in my apps on and press Save app ads. You may be asked to sign in again: these codes decide where your money goes.
  4. Your apps start in test mode: they show Google's sample ads, which are safe to tap.
  5. When you are ready, press Start earning and confirm. Real ads show the next time readers open the app.

Good to know

  • A new App ID needs a new app version. Make one on keynate.com → Apps → Make a new app version. Ad codes, places and the on/off switch change without a new version.
  • Where ads show: a banner at the bottom of each story, a banner in story lists (after every 6 stories, never in the first 3) and one inside the story text (after paragraph 4). Change them under Where ads show.
  • Never on the splash screen, your account pages, privacy and consent screens, checkout or live TV.
  • Readers whose membership is ad-free never see ads.
  • app-ads.txt is done for you. Your site serves Google's line for your AdMob account at /app-ads.txt. In AdMob, Apps → View all apps → app-ads.txt shows when Google has checked it.
  • For readers in Europe and the UK: in AdMob open Privacy & messaging → European regulations → Create (Google's consent form). Don't create an IDFA message: your iPhone app asks readers itself.
  • Every code change is saved in the activity log and the site owner gets an email.
  • Nia and the AI helpers can explain this page but never change your codes.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say "These codes come from two different AdMob accounts"?

The App ID and the ad unit codes must come from the same app in one AdMob account. Copy them again from AdMob.

Why does it say "This is an ad unit code"?

You pasted an ad unit code (with a /) in the App ID box. The App ID has a ~ in it.

Can I tap my own ads to test?

Only in test mode. Never tap your own real ads: Google can close your AdMob account for that.

How do I stop ads?

Turn off Show ads in my apps and press Save app ads. Ads disappear the next time readers open the app.
