How do I test two headlines or photos?

In this story

Where: Growth → Analytics → Headline tests

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/growth/headline-tests (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • The story must be published.
  • You need permission to view analytics. Starting a test needs permission to run tests.

Steps

  1. Open a published story and choose Test headlines. The form opens with the story number filled in.
  2. Add 1 to 3 other versions with Add another version. Give each a Headline or a Photo number from your media library.
  3. Under When to stop, set Views needed first, Stop after (days) and How sure we must be.
  4. Optionally set Who sees what (%). Leave empty to share equally, or enter whole percentages that add up to 100.
  5. Optionally turn on Use the winner automatically when the test ends.
  6. Tap Start test.

Home page spots. You can also test a home slot: choose Home slot, then change the Style or Position on the home page.

End a test. Tap Use the winner, Use version … or Stop the test.

Good to know

  • Readers are split on the server, so the page never jumps while it loads.
  • Each version must be shown the "Views needed" number of times before a winner is picked.
  • The page tells you in one sentence who is ahead, and whether it is "a real difference" or "could still be luck".
  • Using a version changes the story's headline and photo for everyone. You can undo this in the story history.
  • Stopping a test keeps the story as it is now. Results stay on the page.

Common problems

  • "Enter the number of a published story."
  • "Each version needs a headline or a photo."
  • "The percentages must be whole numbers that add up to 100…"
