How do I sort my media into folders?

In this story

Where: Media

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/media (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

You need permission to edit media to create, rename or move folders, and permission to delete media to delete a folder.

Steps

Create a folder

  1. Open Media library.
  2. In the folder list, tap New folder.
  3. Type a Folder name, for example "Elections 2026", and tap Save.

Create a sub-folder

  1. Open the folder's actions menu ("Folder actions for …").
  2. Tap New sub-folder, type the name and tap Save.

Move pictures into a folder

  1. On a laptop, drag pictures onto a folder.
  2. On a phone or tablet, tap Select, tick the pictures, tap Move to… and choose the folder.
  3. To take pictures out of every folder, choose Not in a folder.

Rename, move or delete a folder

  1. Open the folder's actions menu.
  2. Choose Rename folder, Move to… or Delete.

Good to know

  • The list starts with All media and Not in a folder. On a phone the folder list folds into a bar at the top, "Folder: …".
  • A folder with sub-folders can be collapsed or expanded.
  • A folder cannot be moved into itself or its own sub-folders.
  • If a folder is not empty, you are asked to Move up and delete. The files and sub-folders move up one level. No file is deleted. The message says: "Folder “…” deleted. Its files were not deleted."
  • New sub-folder is turned off when a folder is already at the deepest level.
  • When you upload from the image picker, new files go into the folder you are looking at.

Common problems

  • I cannot drag on my phone. Dragging works on a laptop. Use Select and Move to… instead.
  • New sub-folder is greyed out. That folder is at the deepest level, or the site has reached its folder limit.
