How much should my photos be compressed?

In this story

Where: Media → Photo settings (Compression section)

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/media#compression (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Steps

  1. Open Media, then Photo settings. The page is titled Media settings. Find Compression.
  2. Choose one: High quality (sharpest photos, larger files), Balanced (good looks and fast pages, recommended) or Smallest files (fastest pages and least data, a little softer).
  3. To add modern files, turn on Also make AVIF versions.
  4. Tap Save.

Good to know

  • AVIF files are smaller for modern browsers but take longer to prepare.
  • If your server cannot make AVIF, the switch is off and says "Not available on this server yet."
  • You can override quality for one image in the image editor.

Common problems

  • Old pictures look the same. Use Re-apply to outdated images.
