How do I write an explainer story with key points and questions answered?

In this story

Where: Stories → All stories → The story editor

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles (replace <your-site> with your site address). Then open the one you want.

Before you start

  • This feature is made for Science and Environment sites, where it is on by default. A site of another kind can't add it.

Steps

  1. Open Stories and choose New story.
  2. Under Start from, pick Explainer.
  3. Fill the Key points box with 3 to 5 short lines. Readers see it right under the byline.
  4. Write the headings and text. Keep each paragraph short.
  5. Fill the FAQ at the end with the questions readers ask. Keep each answer short.
  6. Add your sources in the panel Help Google and AI quote you right, under Sources. Readers see them as a list at the end.
  7. Publish the story.

See also Summary box and key points and FAQ.

Good to know

  • Explainer strip. Some templates show a row of your explainers on the home page, each with an Explainer label. The strip comes from the template.
  • Say what the evidence can and can't show. On a Science site the AI helpers are set to name the paper, the journal and the date, and to say when a study is small, early or not yet peer reviewed. They write drafts only.
  • Section. The Science site has a section called Explainers. Put your explainer there.
  • The FAQ block can also help search engines understand your page. Nothing guarantees a special search display.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long should an explainer be?

As long as the question needs. Start with the answer, then show how you know.

Can I turn an old story into an explainer?

Copy the text into a new story started from Explainer, or add a Key points box and an FAQ to the old story.
