How do I write a new story?

In this story

Where: Stories → New story

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles/new (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • You need a role that can write stories: owner, admin, editor, reporter, copy editor or contributor. Photo editors and legal reviewers can not start new stories.

Steps

  1. Tap Write a story on Home, or New story on the Stories list.
  2. If your site offers it, pick a Start from story type at the top to begin with a ready layout.
  3. Choose the Type: Story, Photo gallery or Video. Gallery and video need their feature to be on for your site. A lock means it is not available.
  4. Write the Headline. The hint counts up to 110 characters for a clear headline. The limit is 300.
  5. Write a short Summary: one or two sentences that tell the story.
  6. Under Where it shows and who wrote it, choose the Main section and add at least one author. These are needed to publish.
  7. Under Lead image, tap Add lead image, pick or upload a picture, and add a Caption.
  8. Write the story in the large Story box. Type / to see the blocks you can insert.
  9. Tap Save. The first save creates your draft.

Good to know

  • Optional fields: Short headline (for small cards, push alerts and apps), Teaser (for story cards and sharing) and Dateline, such as a city.
  • Your work is also kept on this device while you type. If the connection drops, the bar says "Offline: changes are kept on this device". When you come back, you can restore or discard an unsaved draft.
  • Reporters and contributors send the story for review. Editors and owners publish.

Common problems

  • Publish story is greyed out. A required field is missing: headline, main section, or author. Tap the item in the Ready to publish strip to jump to it.
  • "Someone else is editing this story right now. Wait, or ask an editor to take over." Another person has the story open. Wait, or ask an editor to take over.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a main section?

Yes, once your site has sections. The editor will not publish without one.

Can I change the type later?

No. The type is chosen when the story is created.
