How do I change the file name of an image for search engines?

In this story

Where: Media

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/media (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

You need permission to edit media. The picture should have alt text if you want an automatic name.

Steps

  1. Open Media library and tap a picture.
  2. Open SEO file name.
  3. In File name in the image address, type the name. Use lower-case letters, numbers and hyphens.
  4. Tap Save file name.
  5. To undo, tap Back to automatic (from alt text).

Good to know

  • A name made from alt text shows as a suggestion: a button that starts with Use.
  • Other scripts such as Hindi, Bengali or Arabic are written in Latin letters automatically. For example कोलकाता becomes kolkata.
  • After saving, the message says: "File name saved. The image is being renamed; old addresses keep working." Old addresses forward to the new name.
  • The permanent link does not change. See Public image links.

Common problems

  • The name did not change at once. The image is being renamed in the background. Wait a moment and open it again.
  • The name keeps changing when I edit alt text. Set your own name, and it stays.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the file name help my search ranking?

It can make the address clearer for people and search engines. Nothing is promised about ranking.

Will my old links break?

No. Old addresses forward to the new name.
