In this story

Where: Settings → Content & publishing → Breaking news settings

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/breaking (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • Anyone who writes stories can see these rules. Saving needs the right permission. Otherwise the page says "You can see these rules. Only the owner can change them."

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Content & publishing → Breaking news settings.
  2. Under Who can publish without review, tick the roles. Everyone else sends a breaking story to an editor first.
  3. Under For which kinds of story, choose the urgency levels (for example Breaking, Flash).
  4. Optional: turn on Skip the pre-publish checklist for these stories. Safety checks such as a headline, a byline and a section always run.
  5. Under Time limits, set Stays breaking for (hours) from 1 to 72.
  6. Set Longest front-page takeover (hours) from 1 to 48.
  7. Save. The page says "Breaking news rules saved."
