How do I list sources and fact-check a story?

In this story

Where: Stories → All stories → The story editor

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles (replace <your-site> with your site address). Then open the one you want.

Where to find it

On a laptop it is in the right-hand column of the story editor. On a phone or tablet, scroll down below the story. Open Sources and fact-check (private). Save the story first.

Steps

  1. Tap Add source. Pick the Type: person, document, web link, data, or photo or video.
  2. Type the Name or title. Add a Link (evidence) if there is one.
  3. Tick Confidential for a source only you, editors and the legal desk may see.
  4. Editors mark each source as verified or disputed.
  5. Under Fact-check, set the Fact-check status and write what was checked. Tap Save fact-check.

Good to know

  • Readers never see this list.
  • A disputed or failed fact-check gives a warning before publishing.
  • For a public list of sources at the end of the story, use Help Google and AI quote you right.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference with Private notes and proof?

Sources are who and what the story is based on. Private notes and proof keeps the files and links that back them up.
