How do I set my app's name, icon and colours?

In this story

Before you start

Your site has the Android or iPhone app (see Add apps). For your own icon, have a square PNG or JPG picture, 1024 × 1024 pixels if you can.

Steps

  1. Open My sites, tap your site, then Your apps.
  2. In the On this page menu, tap App name & icon. Or, in the store guide, tap Set name and icon (Change name and icon if you set it before). Both open the card Your app's name and icon.
  3. Under 1. Name under the icon, type the App name on the phone. It can have up to 30 letters, but phones show about 12. Longer names get cut. A preview of an iPhone and an Android home screen shows how it looks.
  4. Check Name in Google Play and the App Store and the short description. Keynate filled them in from your site.
  5. Under 2. App icon, choose one:
    • Upload my icon: tap Choose a picture. Any PNG or JPG of 256 pixels or more works. Keynate resizes it to 1024 × 1024. If the picture is not square, drag it to choose the square.
    • Use my site logo: Keynate makes the icon from your site logo on your brand colour when you save. If your site has no logo yet, add one in your site admin first.
    • Keep the default icon: the small icon your website already has, or the first letters of your app name. Fine for testing.
  6. Under 3. Colours, pick the Start screen colour (shown for a moment while the app opens) and the Button colour (buttons, links and the selected tab). Keynate starts from your site's colour.
  7. Tap Save name and icon. The card now says Done ✓.
  8. Already made a version of your app? Make it again so the stores get the new name and icon: tap Make my app in the store guide, or Build Android app / Build iPhone app under Build, preview and publish.

Good to know

  • See-through parts of your icon are filled with your button colour. Apple doesn't allow see-through icons.
  • Keep the important part of your icon in the middle. Android cuts the corners into a circle.
  • The icon, feature graphic and store screenshots are made again at every build.
  • The name in the store can be different from the name under the icon. You set the store name under Store listing.
  • New stories reach your app by themselves. You only build again when you change the name, icon, colours or notification settings, or when Keynate releases an app update.

Common problems

  • "This picture is bigger than 4 MB." Save it smaller and try again.
  • "Choose a PNG or JPG picture, or use your site logo instead." Other file types are not accepted.
  • "It may look a little soft." Your picture is under 512 pixels. Upload a bigger one for a sharp icon.
  • My phone still shows the old icon. Phones keep the icon of the installed version. Install the new version from the store or your test link.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the name after my app is in the store?

Yes. Change it here, make a new version and publish it. The package name and bundle ID can't change once the store knows your app.

Does the icon change my website?

No. It is only for your apps. Your website logo stays as it is.
