How do I let readers sign in to my site?

In this story

Where: Settings → Readers & money → Connections → Readers & sign-in (Let readers sign in section)

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/connections/readers#kn-r1c-h (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • You are the site owner. Other team members can see the card but cannot press the button.
  • Save or discard any changes on the page first. The button waits until you do.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Readers & money → Connections. Find the card Let readers sign in.
  2. Read the list. Each line says what the button will turn on:
    • Sign in with email. Readers get a short code by email.
    • Sign in with Google. Readers sign in with one tap.
    • Sign-up box for readers. A small box invites readers to sign up while they read. If you use Newsletters, the sign-up form also shows Also send me the newsletter (ticked at the start; unticked for readers in the EU and UK).
    • Bot check. It stops fake sign-ups from using up your email.
  3. Press Let readers sign in.
  4. Wait a moment. The card shows Readers can sign in when it worked.
  5. Press See it on your site to look at it as a reader.

Good to know

  • You can press the button again at any time. Nothing is done twice.
  • If a line says Needs an email service first, press Connect email. Your site already sends sign-in codes with Keynate Email when it is ready.
  • Google's window says Keynate. If you want your own name there, press Use your own Google sign-in.
  • If one step cannot be turned on, the others still work. The card names the one that waits and gives a link to fix it.
  • The bot check is recommended. Press Set up the bot check if it says Not set up.
  • Readers and the newsletter. In Newsletters, turn on Add new readers to this newsletter to choose which newsletter new readers join. A signed-in reader joins with one tap and gets no confirmation email. See Newsletters guide.

Common problems

  • "Not on yet". Nothing is turned on. Press the button, or follow the link on the line that waits.
  • "Couldn't turn on". Nothing else changed. Press the button again.
  • The sign-up box says "Waits for email". Connect email, then press the button again.
  • Google says "Not available on this site yet". Readers can use email meanwhile. It starts by itself when Keynate has it ready for your site.
