How do I add images and galleries to a story?

Where: Stories → All stories → The story editor

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles (replace <your-site> with your site address). Then open the one you want.

Before you start

• You need permission to upload media. If the site has no photo storage yet, uploads show "Photo storage isn’t set up yet, so images can’t be uploaded."

Steps

1. Lead image: in Lead image tap Add lead image. Pick a picture in the Media library box and tap Insert. Add a Caption. Tap Change or Remove later.
2. Image in the story: place the cursor where you want it and choose Image from the toolbar, the Insert menu or the / menu.
3. In the picker use the Library, Upload, or From URL tab. A Free images tab may also show. Tick the image and tap Insert.
4. With the image selected, set the Size (In text, Wide, Full width), the Crop (Landscape 16:9, Standard 4:3, Square 1:1, Original), the Alt text and the Caption.
5. Gallery: choose Gallery, pick at least 2 images, and tap Insert. Set the Layout to Swipe or Grid. Tap Change to pick different photos.

Good to know

• Alt text describes the picture for people who can not see it. It is limited to 250 characters. Captions can be 500.
• Only JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and GIF images can be added, up to 25 MB each.
• A missing alt text shows the hint "Describe this image for people who can’t see it". Your owner may make a lead image alt text required for publishing.
• Photo gallery stories use Gallery photos in the story form, with a caption per photo and Move up and Move down buttons.
• In the picker you can choose a folder with Save to folder when you upload.

Common problems

• "… is larger than 25 MB." The file is too big. Make the file smaller and upload again.
• "…: only JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or GIF images can be added here." The file type is not supported. Convert it to one of those types.
• "You don’t have permission to upload images." Your role can not upload. Ask an editor or the owner.
