How does the story editor work?

In this story

Where: Stories → All stories → The story editor

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles (replace <your-site> with your site address). Then open the one you want.

Before you start

  • Open any story from Stories, or start a new one.

The top bar

  • Back returns to the list. A status label shows Draft, In review, Scheduled, Published and so on.
  • A save note shows Saving…, Saved with the time, Saved on this device, Offline: changes are kept on this device, or "Couldn’t save. We’ll keep trying."
  • Preview opens the story as readers see it. Preview on devices shows phone and desktop.
  • Save keeps your changes. On a live story it reads Update.
  • The main button changes with your role and the story status: Publish story, Send for review, Unpublish. The button for the whole site is separate and is called Publish changes. The More actions menu adds Schedule, Back to draft, Make a copy, Archive, Retract story, Move to trash, and Test headlines for live stories (when analytics is on).
  • The Ready to publish strip lists what is missing. Tap an item to jump to it.

The writing area

Write in the Story box. Type / to open "Insert block". A menu bar and toolbar sit above it. See Toolbar and menus.

Panels

Below or beside the story you find Story settings with panels such as More Google and sharing options, Can Google find this story?, Links to your other stories, Versions (undo changes), and more, depending on your role and features.

Good to know

  • If someone else is editing, you see who and the story is read-only. Editors can take it over.
  • A retracted story can not be edited. A story in the trash or archive shows a banner with Restore or Bring back as draft.
  • If two people save at once, you can choose Keep my version or Use their version.
  • Your edits are saved to the server as you go, and also on this device.

Common problems

  • "Unsaved draft found. This device has changes from … that were not saved to the server." The page closed before saving. Choose Restore them or Discard them.
  • "Someone else changed this article." Another person saved first. Choose Keep my version or Use their version.
