How do I set a story’s search title, description and web address?

In this story

Where: Stories → All stories → The story editor

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/articles (replace <your-site> with your site address). Then open the one you want.

Before you start

  • If your role can not change these settings, the panel says "Your role can’t change the search and social settings of this page."

Steps

1. Open the story and expand More Google and sharing options in Story settings.
  2. Web address: type short, lowercase words, or tap Make from headline. Changing it later adds a redirect automatically.
  3. SEO title: the title shown in Google results. Leave it empty to use the headline. Aim for 60 characters or fewer.
  4. Meta description: the text under the title in search results. Aim for 120 to 160 characters.
  5. Focus keyword: the main phrase readers search for. The score checks it.
  6. Under Social cards set the Title on the card, Description on the card and Choose image. Images should be at least 1200 px wide for large cards and Google Discover.
  7. Check the Previews, then tap Save social settings. Save the story as usual.

Good to know

  • Hide from search engines (noindex) keeps this story out of search results.
  • Canonical address (optional) is only for a story that first appeared on another site.
  • Show “Updated” on this story can be Automatic (only for real changes), Yes or No.
  • Other switches let you keep a page out of AI answers, limit text snippets, choose the image preview size, or leave the page out of the XML sitemap.
  • Social settings need a saved story. For a new one it says "Save the story once to set its social cards and see the previews."
  • AI suggestions for titles, descriptions and alt text are an add-on. Included in some plans: see your plan on keynate.com.

Common problems

  • The search title is cut in Google. It is longer than about 60 characters. Shorten it. The panel counts the characters.
