What are the settings (DNS records) I have to copy?

In this story

How a record looks

Each record has three parts:

  • Type, for example A, CNAME or TXT.
  • Name (also called Host), for example www or @.
  • Value, where it points.

Every part has a copy button. The values are different for every site, so always copy them from your screen. Do not type them from an article.

What each type does

  • TXT. A small note that proves the web address is yours.
  • CNAME. Sends one name, like www or blog, to your website.
  • A. Makes your address work without "www".
  • AAAA. An older pointer. If an old one stays, some visitors still see your old website. Delete it.
  • CAA. Says which companies may secure your address. If you have one, it must allow Let's Encrypt (letsencrypt.org).
  • MX. Only for optional site email. It collects bounced emails.

Steps

  1. Open your site's address page: My sites, your site, then the address.
  2. Under Your settings to copy, read each Setting 1, Setting 2… The screen tells you why each is needed.
  3. In your domain account, choose Add record and pick the same Type. Paste the Name and the Value.
  4. Under Show details you see all rows in a table.
  5. Save. Come back and tap Check now.

Good to know

  • TTL can stay on Automatic or 1 hour.
  • Name "@" means the address itself. Some providers write the full address instead. Namecheap uses "@" for the address and "www" for www.
  • If a setting with the same type and name already exists, edit it instead of adding a new one.
  • Some providers don't allow the record type shown. The screen may list an alternative value to use instead.
  • Keynate shows each row's state. A tick means it is correct. Points somewhere else means the value is wrong.

Common problems

  • "[name] points to [value]. Change it to the value shown here." Edit the record.
  • "There’s an old setting of type AAAA for your web address. Delete it, or some visitors will see your old site."
  • "Your address only lets some companies secure it. Add a setting of type CAA for letsencrypt.org."
  • "Your Cloudflare orange cloud is on. Switch it to the grey cloud (DNS only)."
