How do I use the step-by-step setup wizard?

In this story

Where: Settings → Site & brand → Set up your site (Set up your site section)

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/setup (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • You need permission to manage the site.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and choose Set up your site in the menu, or use the setup card on Home. The page title is Set up your site.
  2. Under Your set-up steps, read the progress, for example "3 of 11 done, 1 skipped".
  3. Each step has a status: To do, Done or Skipped. The eleven steps cover: your niche, language and country; name, logo, colours and fonts; sections and the header menu; free features; About, Contact, Privacy, Terms and Editorial policy pages; your team and author bios; search engines, Google News and sharing; push notifications and apps; ads, subscriptions or donations (optional); example stories; and a last check before you tell readers.
  4. Press Open to do a step.
  5. When finished, press Mark done. To leave it for later, press Skip. Press Undo to change your mind.
  6. For the sections step, press Choose sections and see the next part.

Choosing ready-made sections

  1. Under Start with ready-made sections, pick the set that fits your site. One is marked Recommended.
  2. Under Sections, untick any section to leave it out and rename the ones you keep.
  3. Tick Add the sections to the header menu if you want them in the menu.
  4. Under Features in this set, press Turn on for free features. Paid add-ons are only offered. Nothing is bought or switched on for you.
  5. Optionally keep the Sample content: example stories saved as drafts that search engines can't see.
  6. Press Preview changes, read "This is what will change", then press Apply now.

Good to know

  • Sections that already exist are reused, so nothing is created twice. Nothing else on your site changes.
  • A step may say "This looks done already. Mark it done if you are happy with it."
  • The result line says how many sections were created, already there, skipped or added to the menu. A section may be skipped because the feature it needs is off or the address is reserved.

Common problems

  • "Needs the {feature} feature; it will be skipped until that is on."
