How do I update my site's software?

In this story

Where: Settings → Advanced → Software update

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/updates (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • Owners, admins and editors can see this page. Only the site owner can install, schedule or undo updates.
  • Every update needs your choice, except critical security fixes. You get a message in your admin when one is ready.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Advanced → Software update.
  2. Read the top line: "An update is ready" or "Your site is up to date."
  3. Install or schedule an update. See How do I install an update?.
  4. Check Installed versions and Maintenance window further down.
  5. Open History to see past updates and to undo one.

Good to know

  • The page shows when it last checked, and whether it is Connected to Keynate.
  • If your site cannot reach Keynate, the page says "Can't reach Keynate right now. Your requests are kept and sent when the connection is back."
  • Demo sites update automatically.
  • Every update has an automatic undo if the health check fails: "The update didn’t pass the health check, so your site went back to the previous version. Nothing was lost." See My update was rolled back.
  • Your customizations lists the changes you or the AI made to your site's design or code, and whether each one is Kept, Will be re-applied or Needs a look. A backup is made first, and this list never blocks the update.
  • Needs your review shows when you changed a part that the update also changes. For each part choose Keep my version, Use Keynate’s version (your change is saved as a draft you can restore) or Re-apply my change with AI. Nothing is lost.
  • After an update, Undo this update works for a limited time ("You can undo it until …"). Critical security updates can’t be undone with one click.
  • If your newsroom is busy (a live blog is running or a story was just published), the update waits a few minutes.

Common problems

  • "We haven't checked for updates yet. This page fills in as soon as your site connects to Keynate."
  • "Only the site owner can install, schedule or undo updates."

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to update?

Optional updates wait for you. Critical security updates can't be skipped, but you choose the time.

Will I lose my work?

No. We take a backup first. If anything fails the health check, your site goes back automatically.
