How do I get my Google Gemini key?

In this story

Where: Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/ai/providers (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • A Google account.
  • A Google Cloud project for the key. AI Studio can create one for you.
  • Only members who manage AI can connect an account, and you need to have signed in recently.

Steps

  1. Open the Google AI Studio key page and sign in.
  2. Choose Create API key. Pick an existing Google Cloud project, or let AI Studio create one.
  3. Copy the key.
  4. Check your limits on the usage page. If you need more, set up billing for the project.
  5. In your site admin, open Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts. Find the Google Gemini card.
  6. Paste the key and tap Test & connect. You see "Checking your key…" and then Connected ✓.

It starts with AIza… and is 39 characters long. Your admin checks the shape before it sends the key anywhere. Using AI providers

Good to know

  • Google may allow some free use with strict limits, and charges for higher use once billing is on. What is free depends on your country and changes over time, so check Google’s current terms. Check also what Google does with content sent on free use.
  • The key goes only to the AI workspace on your own server. Keynate never sees it and never adds a fee.
  • Keep the key private. Never put it in a support ticket or a chat.
  • If you stop using Google Gemini, remove the account in Your AI accounts and delete the key on the Google Gemini website too.

Common problems

Gemini refused this key

Copy the whole key again. The key must come from the project you meant, and the Gemini API must be allowed for it.

You hit a daily or free limit

Google may answer with a quota message. Wait for the limit to reset, or turn on billing for the project, then tap Test again.

Gemini says free use is not available in your country

Turn on billing for your Google Cloud project, then try again.

Gemini is limiting requests right now

Wait a minute and try again.
