Where: Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts
Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/ai/providers (replace <your-site> with your site address)
Before you start
- An xAI console account and a team. API access needs a team.
- Credit or a payment method on that team.
- Only members who manage AI can connect an account, and you need to have signed in recently.
Steps
- Open the xAI console and sign in. Create a team if the console asks for one.
- Open API Keys and create a new key.
- Allow the key to use chat and language models.
- Copy the key now. The console shows it only once.
- In the same console, open billing and add credit or a payment method.
- In your site admin, open Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts. Find the xAI card.
- Paste the key and tap Test & connect. You see "Checking your key…" and then Connected ✓.
It starts with xai-. Your admin checks the shape before it sends the key anywhere. Using AI providers
Good to know
- xAI charges for each request from the team’s credit. New accounts may get promotional credit, but the amount and how long it lasts change, so read the console. Keynate adds nothing on top.
- The key goes only to the AI workspace on your own server. Keynate never sees it and never adds a fee.
- Keep the key private. Never put it in a support ticket or a chat.
- If you stop using xAI, remove the account in Your AI accounts and delete the key on the xAI website too.
Common problems
xAI refused this key
Copy the whole key again. Keys belong to one team, so use a key from the team that has credit.
Your xAI account has no credit left
Add credit in the xAI console, then tap Test again.
This model or deployment isn’t available on your xAI account
Choose another model, or allow the key to use language models in the console.
xAI is limiting requests right now
Wait a minute and try again.
Questions

Where do I add credit?
On the xAI website, not in Keynate. The billing page is linked from the xAI card in Your AI accounts. Billing page
Can I use more than one provider?
Yes. Connect as many as you like, choose a default model, and set the order the site tries them in. Using AI providers
