How do I get my OpenAI key?

In this story

Where: Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/ai/providers (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • An OpenAI account. A ChatGPT subscription is a separate product and does not cover API use.
  • A payment method or credit on the OpenAI platform, so the key can be used.
  • Only members who manage AI can connect an account, and you need to have signed in recently.

Steps

  1. Open the OpenAI API keys page and sign in.
  2. Choose Create new secret key. Give it a name you will recognise, such as the name of your site.
  3. If you are asked for a project, pick the one you want this site billed to. A separate project per site keeps costs easy to read.
  4. Leave the permissions on All. A key limited to read-only cannot make requests.
  5. Copy the key now. OpenAI shows it only once.
  6. Add credit on the OpenAI billing page if your account has none. OpenAI uses prepaid credit.
  7. In your site admin, open Settings → Content & publishing → Your AI accounts. Find the OpenAI card.
  8. Paste the key and tap Test & connect. You see "Checking your key…" and then Connected ✓.

It starts with sk-, often sk-proj-. Your admin checks the shape before it sends the key anywhere. Using AI providers

Good to know

  • OpenAI charges for each request. Add prepaid credit on the billing page, and you can set limits there. Keynate adds nothing on top.
  • The key goes only to the AI workspace on your own server. Keynate never sees it and never adds a fee.
  • Keep the key private. Never put it in a support ticket or a chat.
  • If you stop using OpenAI, remove the account in Your AI accounts and delete the key on the OpenAI website too.

Common problems

OpenAI refused this key

The key was copied in part, was deleted, or belongs to another project. Create a new key and paste the whole value.

Your OpenAI account has no credit left

Add credit on the OpenAI billing page, wait a minute, then tap Test again.

This model or deployment isn’t available on your OpenAI account

Your project may not have access to that model. Choose another model, or allow it in your OpenAI project settings.

OpenAI is limiting requests right now

Wait a minute and try again. New accounts have low limits that grow with use.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Where do I add credit?

On the OpenAI website, not in Keynate. The billing page is linked from the OpenAI card in Your AI accounts. Billing page

Can I use more than one provider?

Yes. Connect as many as you like, choose a default model, and set the order the site tries them in. Using AI providers
