How do I change my app's colours and tabs?

In this story

Where: Settings → Site & brand → App

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/app (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • Your site needs an app. If the page says Your site has no app yet, press Add an app. See Add apps.
  • Sending notifications to readers needs the Push alerts feature. If you don't have it, the page shows See features.

Steps: change the look

  1. Open Settings → Site & brand → App.
  2. Under App look choose Same as my website or Its own colour.
  3. For its own colour, pick the Accent colour. Choose one dark enough to read white text on it.
  4. Under Light or dark choose Same as my website, Light, Dark or Follow the phone's setting.
  5. Check the phone preview. Use Preview dark or Preview light to see both.
  6. Press Save app look. To go back, press Use my website look.

Steps: change the bottom tabs

  1. Under Bottom tabs use the arrows to move a tab up or down.
  2. Press Hide on a tab you don't want, or Add a tab to bring one back.
  3. Press Save tabs. To go back, press Back to the template tabs.

Steps: send a notification

  1. Under Send a push type the Headline and, if you like, one more line.
  2. Under Story it opens type 2 or more letters and choose a published story.
  3. Choose Who gets it: everyone who follows your site, or readers who follow certain sections.
  4. Leave When empty to send now, or choose a time.
  5. Press Send push. It goes through your approval in Reader notifications, like every notification.

Good to know

  • Home and Me tabs always stay. The app shows a limited number of tabs. Hide one to add another.
  • Your website's fonts show in the app too. A font the app doesn't have yet appears after its next app update.
  • Each day you can send only a limited number of pushes. The page shows how many are left. The owner can change the limit under Pushes a day.
  • You can ask the AI, for example "Use the same new colours in my app".

Common problems

  • "Sending notifications to readers is a paid feature." Add Push alerts on keynate.com, or press See features.
  • My change isn't in the app. Readers see changes the next time they open the app.
  • The colour is refused. Pick a darker colour so white text is readable.
