How do I go back to an earlier version of my site's design?

In this story

Where: Settings → Site & brand → Design history

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/versions (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • You need permission to manage the site.
  • Your server's site builder must be connected. The page shows Site builder connected, Waiting for your server's site builder or Site builder not reachable right now. Builds wait; your live site is not changed meanwhile.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Site & brand → Design history.
  2. To make a new version, press Build new version.
  3. Wait: "Building your site… This takes a few minutes." The state becomes Ready to preview.
  4. Press Preview, then Publish this version. Confirm "Publish version {number}? Readers will see it right away."
  5. To go back, press Go back to the previous version and confirm. Or on an older version, press Make this current. It becomes the newest version. Nothing is deleted.

Good to know

  • Each version shows who or what made it: a person, AI assistant or Keynate update, plus what changed (Branding, Design, Template switch, Rebuild).
  • States: Not built, Building, Ready to preview, Live, Build failed, Replaced.
  • Compare with live and Compare show the differences. View build log helps when a build fails.
  • If a version is no longer stored on your server, press Rebuild this version first.
  • If nothing changed: "Nothing changed since version {number}, so it was not built again."
  • A failed build never changes your live site.

Common problems

  • "The build failed. Your live site was not changed."
  • "This server can't build your site: {reason}"
  • "Your server refused this ({code})."
