How are my site and settings backed up?

In this story

Where: Settings → Advanced → Backups & downloads (Backups section)

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/data#backups (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • This feature is part of your site by default.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Advanced → Backups & downloads.
  2. Read Backups. Press See your last backup to see the time of your last backup on keynate.com.
  3. To keep your own copy, press Make my full copy under Download everything. Or choose Back up settings now.
  4. To restore settings, open Restore settings and choose the file.

To bring back the whole site from a nightly backup, see Restore a backup. Photo and video backup is an add-on: see Photo and video backup.

Good to know

  • A settings backup holds site settings, branding, menus and the home page in one small file.
  • Only settings files are restored here, not stories.
  • Uploaded images and videos are not in the nightly backup yet. Download everything includes them.
  • Demo sites are reset every night, so changes there are not kept.
  • You cannot switch this feature off. Built-in features do not have a switch in Features.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I get all my stories?

Download your content. It is one ZIP with every story as JSON, HTML and Markdown, plus authors, sections, pages, the media list and settings.

How long are the files kept?

Nightly backups: 90 days, away from your server. Downloads stay on your server for 24 hours (full copies 3 days, safety backups 30 days).

Can I check a backup before restoring?

Yes. We show what changes first, and nothing changes until you confirm.
