How do I take payments from readers?

In this story

Where: Settings → Readers & money → Connections → Payments

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/connections/payments (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Before you start

  • The Payments feature must be on your site. If it is not, you see an add-on card instead of the settings. See your plan on keynate.com.
  • Admins can view this screen. Only the owner can change it.
  • Have your gateway account ready (Razorpay, Stripe or PayPal).

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Readers & money → Connections. On the Payment gateways card, press All payment settings.
  2. You see five tabs: Connections, Countries & taxes, Seller & GST, Checkout & receipts and Request a gateway.
  3. On Connections, press Connect Razorpay, Connect Stripe or Connect PayPal. If nothing is connected yet, the page suggests the best one for your country: India → Razorpay, Stripe countries (for example the US, UK and most of Europe) → Stripe, everywhere else → PayPal. The other two are under Other ways to get paid. See How do I connect a payment gateway?.
  4. Use Test connection on the card, then the test payment button (it shows the small test amount). This button appears for test connections only.
  5. When the test works, press the button Go live with Razorpay (or Go live with Stripe, Go live with PayPal) in the yellow Test mode bar. It opens the sheet for the live connection of that gateway. Add your live details there. Until you do, readers can't buy.
  6. Fill in Seller & GST and Checkout & receipts.
  7. Press Save changes on those tabs.

Good to know

  • The tab title shows a number when something on that tab needs fixing, for example "2 things to fix".
  • If you leave with unsaved changes, the admin warns you.

Common problems

  • You see an add-on card. Payments is not active on your site yet.
  • Fields are greyed out. Only the owner can change payment settings.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Keynate take a cut of my sales?

No. The empty state says money goes straight to your gateway account and Keynate takes no cut.

Which gateway should I use?

India: Razorpay. US, Europe and UK: Stripe. Worldwide wallets: PayPal. With nothing connected, the page picks one for your country and says Best for your country. See Countries and taxes.
