Emails from my site are not arriving (sign-in codes, receipts, replies)

In this story

Where: Settings → Readers & money → Connections

Open this page: admin.<your-site>/settings/connections (replace <your-site> with your site address)

Check 1: is a provider connected?

  1. Open Settings and choose Connections, then Email & SMS.
  2. If you see "No email provider yet. Connect SMTP or Amazon SES so readers can sign in with email and get receipts.", add one. Choose Add email provider.
  3. Pick the provider: SMTP server (any mail service) or Amazon SES. The list also names Resend, Postmark, SendGrid, Mailgun, Brevo and MSG91 (for SMS). Copy the details from your provider, paste them, and save.
  4. If you see "Readers can’t sign in with email yet. Connect an email provider.", the connection is missing.

Keynate's own email is not available yet. The screen says: "Keynate email isn’t available yet. Connect your own provider for now."

Check 2: send a test

  1. In Send a test to, enter your own email address.
  2. Send it. The message is "Sent. Check the inbox (and the spam folder)."
  3. If the test doesn't arrive in a few minutes, go to Check 3.

Check 3: the sending domain

  1. Open the tab Sending domain.
  2. Add the records shown to your domain provider. Keynate never changes your DNS. Changes can take up to an hour.
  3. Choose Check now.
  4. Look at each record's state: OK, Missing, Wrong value or Not checked. The records are SPF, DKIM, DMARC and Return path.
  5. Fix every record that is not OK.

Without these records, mail often lands in spam. See Sending domain (DNS).

Check 4: the delivery log

Open the Delivery log. It shows what your site tried to send and what happened. See Delivery log. If you use the fake provider, nothing is sent. Messages appear only in the log. It is for testing.

Check 5: blocked addresses

An address that bounced or complained is blocked, so you don't keep mailing it. Open Blocked addresses to see it.

Messages you may see

  • "This server address can’t be used. Enter your mail provider’s public SMTP server." Use the public server name, such as smtp.yourmail.com, not a private address.
  • "No working provider is connected for this yet. Connect one and try again." Connect and test a provider.
  • "Enter a valid email address or a phone number with its country code." Check the address.
  • "The provider refused these details. Check them and try again." Check the username, password or keys.

See Error messages: domains and email.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which emails does my site send?

Sign-in codes, receipts and replies. They go out from your own email and SMS accounts.

Why does the test arrive but readers' codes don't?

Check the spam folder and the sending domain records. Mail from a domain without SPF and DKIM is often filtered.
